Marion Local High School’s Nick Tangeman and St. Henry High School’s Carleigh Deitsch have been selected as the 2018-19 Press Pros male and female Scholar Athletes of the year, as selected for their combined athletic and scholastic achievement.
The Press Pros award is the centerpiece of our sponsor program for coverage of MAC sports supported by the following businesses: Winner’s Meats, Wagner’s IGA, Keyhole Pizza, McSobers, Homan Equipment, Leugers Insurance, Kremer Roofing, Fullenkamp Trailers, The Mr. Shoppe, St. Henry Bank, Carriage Werkes, Phelan Insurance, Kaup Pharmacies, Willy’s Bar and Grill, Eric Biggs’ State Farm Insurance, Schwieterman’s Pharmacy, SecureCom, Minster Bank, H.A. Tangeman is a three-sport standout at Marion (football, basketball and track) and is a two-time state champion, having played on the Flyers’ 2017-’18 football and basketball teams. This past season he set a record for football receiving yards in a season at Marion with 1,250 yards and scored 17 touchdowns. For his efforts he received first team Division VI All-Ohio honors. Scholastically, he graduates with a 3.75 GPA and will attend Ohio State University in the fall to study Mechanical Engineering.
Likewise, Carleigh Deitsch was a three-sport participant at St. Henry (volleyball, basketball and softball), earning nine varsity letters and earned MAC All-Academic awards in her sophomore through senior seasons. She earned Honorable Mention All-Ohio recognition in volleyball last fall and was a captain on the Redskins basketball team. She graduates with a 3.83 GPA and will attend Ohio Dominican University in the fall to study Biology.
“I have been honored to represent my school and community on the biggest stages,” says Tangeman. “To have the opportunity to make my hometown proud is an experience that a kid like me will remember for the rest of my life.”
“I have had great teammates and great coaches at St. Henry,” said Deitsch in her application essay. “I’ve learned time management through sports and how to balance it with my work in the classroom. And I will never forget the MAC atmosphere. Nothing can take the place of looking up and seeing the entire community there to support what we were doing.”
Deitsch is the first St. Henry student to receive this award, while Tangeman is the third Marion athlete to earn Press Pros honors, as selected a panel of retired teachers and counselors, with equal emphasis on athletic and scholastic achievement. Each will receive a $2,000 scholarship to help fund the next step in their scholastic career.
Presentation of the awards will take place on Thursday, June 13 at 6 pm, hosted by Moeller Brew Barn in Maria Stein. The public is invited to attend.
