His three touchdown catches accounted for 21 of his team’s 41 in Friday’s Marion Local win over Anna. Flyers receiver Max Ranly gets the nod for this week’s ‘Who’s Hot’ honors.
Maria Stein, OH – Marion Local senior receiver Max Ranly had never had such a night.
But last Friday fate, or karma, or maybe just quarterback Brennen Hess smiled on him in the Flyers’ 41-14 win over the Anna Rockets. Ranly caught touchdown passes of 47, 10, and 4 yards, accounting for 18 of the 41 points scored, and later shrugged about it, oblivious to the score, perhaps, or the margin of victory.
“All I know is that we scored three touchdowns on fourth down,” Ranly smiled, talking with Press Pros writer Bruce Hooley. “That’s probably not so good. We should probably get in the end zone a little sooner, but it’s nice to know we can do it if we have to.”
The likelyhood of catching three touchdown passes in any football game bears consideration, and so we did some digging.
But statistically, the chances of one touchdown catch for the average high school receiver works out to be about 28%.
The average for two touchdown catches for one high school receiver in a game drops to about 11%.
And then the average for a third touchdown catch in the same game, by the same receiver, works out to happening about 1.8% of the time. Ranly had no idea, and of course, no one else did, either. Or cared. All that mattered was…they won.
And they won because Brennen Hess ended up throwing five touchdown passes in the game, which for a high school quarterback is another anomaly. The remaining catches, by the way, were by Andrew Schmackers, who checks in this week in the 11% statistical category of uniqueness.
“It’s high school football,” said Marion coach Tim Goodwin. “So you’re not going to have the same horses every year. So you just have to keep fighting. All we’re thinking about now is the trip to St. Henry next week.”
Their win improves the Marion Local record to 5-0 for the season, and the conversational percentage to well over 50% of area and state people who now begin the annual watch to question just how good is this Marion team, and what are their chances….?
But hey, none of that affects what’s going on at Marion, itself. This week is St. Henry week and that’s all they care about. Chances are there won’t be five touchdown passes, though. The percentages just won’t have it.
