The Reader Speaks….April 26, 2026

After requesting Evan Turner’s retired number, and three years with the Buckeyes, Devin Royal mysteriously entered the portal to seek greener pastures.  (Press Pros Feature Photos)

The latest opinions and comments from readers on Ohio State basketball, versus football…does anything ever really change with Ryan Day…area high school baseball…and Greg Beals.

The mailbox has been alive and well, with reader opinion on a number of recent posts, or in one case, the lack thereof concerning Ohio State basketball.

Minster Dental is proud to sponsor the best in area sports stories on Press Pros Magazine.com.

“OK, so I get that the calendar changes and everyone is consumed with spring football at Ohio State.  And once again Ohio State basketball is now out of sight and out of mind.  Jake Diebler wins 20 games, makes the NCAA tournament, and because they lose in the first round that’s the end of your basketball coverage until next December.  If you cover Ohio State basketball I’d think you might be interested enough to write about Devin Royal leaving and the roster additions for next year, including Scottie Pippen’s kid.  Anthony Thompson, perhaps?  Not worth the time?  Always lots of Ryan Day and nothing on Jake Diebler?  Hmmm.  Is it any wonder that no one cares about Buckeye basketball?”  … Bruce Williams

(Ed. Note:  Point taken, but IMHO it’s a Big Ten issue and not a local issue.  They’re not burning up the wires in Nebraska, Iowa, or Michigan, either, after putting the basketballs away…and Michigan won it all!  No, it’s all about that which pays the bills.  Who’s to blame?  Start at the top.)

Regarding coverage of spring football at Ohio State…..

“Recent reader of Press Pros and your coverage of spring football.  Ryan Day never really says anything.  So let me.  They’re going to throw it to Jeremiah Smith, come September.”  … James Dugan

“Is there anything less relevant that the offensive coordinator at Ohio State?  If that’s not true, then why three in three years, and there were other, better candidates than Arthur Smith.  That’s a window-dressing hire, and come September it’ll be Ryan Day calling the shots.”  … Tim Gaines

“Love Jeff Gilbert’s coverage, but why waste your time writing about Arthur Smith?  When September gets here it’s all about Julian Sayin and Jeremiah Smith.”  … Tom Killilea

“Even at Ohio State it’s impossible to replace Sonny Styles, Arvell Reese, Caleb Downs, Kayden McDonald and Caden Curry all in one year.  Anyone willing to write about that?  … Craig Criswell

“You guys did a good job on the spring game, but this was my takeaway.  Come fall, Ryan Day is going to throw the football to Jeremiah Smith first, and if he’s covered the next available body in desperation.  Julian Sayin is not going to run.  They talk about it every year, but the power run game is history.   Sonny was right.”  … Scot Bradley

“Thanks for saying it.  Will there ever be another Orlando Pace at Ohio State?  No…!”  … Bill Costello (West Palm Beach)

On area high school baseball….

“Even from outside the area I love it, and those kids are so deserving of the effort you guys put into high school baseball.  Purely the best there is.”  … Dan Burcham

“I appreciate your sharing Brady O’Leary’s faith.  And God really doesn’t make mistakes.”  … Sharon Lewis

“I wanted to write and share how much I enjoyed your story last week on Troy baseball and the young man who missed an entire year (Brady O’Leary) with an injury.  I also appreciate your sharing his story about faith, because it matters, and I think it’s wonderful that you’re not ashamed to write about it.  You’re so right, Brady.  God doesn’t make mistakes.  I also wondered if Dr. Kremchek, in Cincinnati, did his surgery because he’s helped several people that I know.  Once again, thank you for what you do.”  … Sharon Lewis

(Ed. Note:  Thanks for your interest Sharon, and we’ll pass along your sentiments.  As for your question about his surgeon, upon checking with the family Dr. Matt Heckler did his reconstruction at the Wilson Health Center for Orthopedics in Sidney, Ohio.  Dr. Heckler is a highly-regarded surgeon with the Orthopedic Associates of Southwest Ohio (OASWO) group.)

And this from a Marshall baseball fan from down on the river….

“I’m so thankful that you wrote about the Marshall-Ohio State baseball game, and that you took the time to catch up with and share the story about Coach Greg Beals.  As a Marshall grad we’re all very appreciative of what he’s brought to the baseball program and how he’s made it matter again in such a short time.  It’s a tough rebuild in that conference.  Thanks again.”  … Bob Stewart

(Ed. Note:  Will share this about our conversation with Beals.  He’s absolutely thrilled to be in Huntington, at Marshall, and was so professional about his return to Ohio State for the first time.  We’ve heard from several, and they all echo your compliments).
