His two touchdowns and 153 yards rushing in Friday’s win over Preble Shawnee were central to the outcome, but that’s probably only the beginning. Chances are you’re going to hear a lot more from this sophomore from Tri-Village High School.
You never know what you’re going to see when you go to a high school football game…and particularly with teams that you don’t see on a regular basis.
But there’s truth to the old adage that there are athletes everywhere, and if they’re good enough sooner or later they’re going to be discovered.
Such is Tri-Village Patriot running back Colt Camacho (no relation to the old welterweight champion, Hector Camacho, nicknamed ‘Macho’). And his moment of discovery came last Friday night when he rushed for 153 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns in the Patriots’ 40-7 showdown win over rival Preble Shawnee High School. Hector…er, Colt…earned not only our attention, but this week’s ‘Who’s Hot’ honoree recognition on Press Pros.
“He (Camacho) took over tonight like he has all year in our biggest games,” said Tri-Village coach Matt Hopkins. “People don’t think of us as a running team because we have a quarterback like Trey (Sagester, who’s thrown for 1,600 yards and 29 touchdowns). And Trey did a great job for us last year in his first year as a starter. He carried the load.
“But now we have a running game with Colt [Noah Finkbine and Staley Colston] that can give Trey some help. That’s the difference in this year and last year. And, we have a good offensive line. I was proud of the way these guys played tonight.”
Of their 266 rushing yards on Friday, Camacho was responsible for more than half (153 yards), his longest coming to conclude the scoring in the fourth quarter was 54 yards. “He runs hard,” said one bystander watching from the sidelines. And for his inexperience as a football player (he’s a sophomore), he runs smart with a sense of timing and patience to let that offensive line create opportunities for him.
He exhibits good balance, and when it’s time to lower his head and take on a tackler…he’s capable of doing that, too, though he weighs less – far less – than 200 pounds.
“I got yelled at this week for not hitting the holes hard enough,” he grinned, following Friday’s game. “So tonight I came out with a different motor. I knew I had to run hard.”
He doesn’t get a lot of media attention in the Western Ohio Athletic Conference, or big crowds to spread the word about his emergence as one of the area’s budding impact running backs. But those who get to watch him will recognize quickly that what he does is unique – what an old coach once described as “playing happy.” Football is fun for him.
Colt Camacho was all smiles on Friday. His team is 9-0, an odds-on favorite to capture the outright WOAC football title in 2025, and an opportunity to open more eyes as a top seed in Region 24, Division VI, in the playoffs. And on top of all that…he’s a very nice young man – makes a good first impression.
Our congratulations to our latest discovery in area high school football…Tri-Village Patriot Colt Camacho, this week’s ‘Who’s Hot’ honoree on Press Pros.
