West Carrollton used its superior size and shot making to snap Sidney’s five-game win streak, 73-66…Chylan and Joseph Ingram combine to score 53.
Sidney, OH – Don’t let their record fool you. West Carrollton, on a ‘big’ night, can ruin your night, and no one knows it better than Sidney coach John Willoughby.
Carrollton, (8-5, 7-5 in MVL) used its superior size inside, a combined 53 points from 6’7″ Chylan Ingram and 6’7″ Joseph Ingram, and enough athleticism to snap the Yellow Jackets’ five-game win streak Tuesday, 73-66.
“This is what happens sometime when you’re out of school for the day, you’re not in the gym, and you’re just a step slow,” said Willoughby about his team’s inability to fight both size and quickness. “They’ve been good on film and they were good tonight. Give them credit.”
Chylan Ingram (a senior) and Joseph Ingram (a junior) are a handful at 6’7″ each and in the range of 230 pounds. Showing athleticism and a soft touch around the rim, Sidney’s smaller interior defense was, well, defenseless against that kind of size and relentlessness on the offensive boards.
“You just can’t practice against that,” smiled Willoughby. “We didn’t box out, and we didn’t have any fouls called on us for boxing out. Our kids just tried to match their size and how high they can jump and you’re not going to do that. We didn’t do a very good job of adjusting to that.”
Things were even through the first 14 points in the first quarter until a Chylan Ingram bucket gave West Carrollton its first lead at 14-13, before Sidney tied it at 15-15 as the horn sounded to end the quarter.
But the Ingrams apparently shook off whatever chill they brought in from the -1 temperature outside, warming up in the second quarter to score 14 of West Carrollton’s 16 points and take a 31-27 halftime lead. Combined, they finished the sixteen minutes with 22 of the Pirates’ 31 points.
To Willoughby’s words, the Pirates played much better than a 7-5 basketball team to start the second half, Chylan Ingram quickly amassing 9 points…Joseph Ingram 6 points…5 of the Pirates’ total of 18, and they extended their lead to start the fourth quarter, 49-39.
Sidney, despite their hustle and willingness to compete, were just no match when the Ingrams attacked the rim, and giving up five inches per man, they were no match on the boards, either. It was one and done on too many Yellow Jackets’ shots…and they weren’t getting enough shots to fall.
But in the final quarter, Sidney finally began to crack the code, cutting an 11-point deficit down to three at one point, as Ethan New’s three-pointer at the 2:00 mark forced a timeout with West Carrollton’s lead cut to 61-58. New would score 8 points in the final eight minutes, and teammate A’zon Steele would suddenly ignite for 10, 18 of the Yellow Jackets’ total of 24 for the quarter.
But they couldn’t keep pace with the Ingrams, who would match those numbers with 16 of their own. To exacerbate things, Steele, Jayce Daniel, and Julius Spradling all had point-blank shots roll off the rim…and the Jackets would leave some added points on the court with three missed shots at the foul line. Ill-timed, as. they would finish the game having hit 15 of 20, while Carrollton would leave a door open, missing 11 of 22 from the line.
They would never get closer than New’s three-pointer (61-58), while Chylan Ingram (31 pts) and Joseph Ingram (22) – 53 of the Pirates’ total of 73 – put the finishing touches on a 73-66 win.
“We missed some shots,” said Willoughby afterwards. “But for the disadvantage we were at with height, and how well they played, you have to give them credit. They played really well, and they have been. They’ve improved tremendously since the first time we played them (a 69-61 Sidney win on Dec. 13).”
Chylan Ingram finished with a game-high 31, Joseph Ingram had 22, Ka’Maree Davis would score 8, and three other Pirates combinedb for their final eight points.
For Sidney, they would see four players finished in double figures. A’zon Steele had 18, Ethan New scored 17, Julius Spradling and Jayce Daniel each had 10. Kaleb Lee had 9 and Connor Widmark had 2.
“We didn’t play our best tonight,” said Willoughby, now 11-3, overall, and 10-2 in conference play.
“When we cut it to three on Ethan’s shot I felt pretty good because we had plenty of time. We had things in a manageable situation, but we didn’t get much out of our press.
“And it just seems like when you’re out of school for the day and you’re not in the gym your mind is a little slower. That’s what it looked like. We were slow tonight, we weren’t on target with what we were supposed to do, defensively, and we’re were a step or two behind. Our minds just weren’t there.”
But a totally different, and impressive story for West Carrollton. The Ingrams WERE there.
And they were pretty good!
