A standout performer on the court and in the classroom, St. Henry senior Morgan Baumer has been picked as recipient of the second annual Press Pros Wells Nursing Scholarship.

In 2021, just a year before long-time Press Pros friend and benefactor Bill Wells passed away in January of 2022, he inquired about an expansion of our then scholar-athlete endowment benefiting students in rural west-central Ohio.

“What would be something that could provide a personal impact upon people in the community?”  asked Wells, who grew up in a small community in Warren County.  And later while serving as the CEO of Davis Foundation, in Columbus, he expressed an interest for support to the field of nursing, and those who choose it as a career.

In 2025, his widow, Jackie, honored his memory by initiating the first scholar-athlete award for nursing with the selection of Anna High School’s Victoria Heitkamp as its first recipient.

This year, that award goes to St. Henry senior Morgan Baumer, who will receive the Jacqueline Wiley Wells Nursing Scholarship in the amount of $3,000 to pursue her nursing career at the University of St. Francis, in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Baumer is a three-sport athlete at St. Henry (volleyball, basketball, and track), and a member of the Redskins’ 2026 Division VI girls basketball championship team.  But in addition to her nursing studies, at St. Francis she will participate in track and field, as well.

She graduates from St. Henry this spring with a GPA of 4.0 while scoring 31 on the ACT test.

Baumer is a two-time caption in volleyball at St. Henry, a two-time caption in girls basketball, and a multiple state qualifier in track and field with All-Ohio recognition.  Her service to the community is exemplary, and her commitment to the support of others was an influence in her decision to pursue a career in nursing.  She missed the state basketball finals in March due to an injury suffered in the regional round of the tournament.

“I realized that even injured my role did not disappear.  My teammates still looked to me for energy and leadership.  I learned how to stay engaged from the sideline, to be encouraging, when pressure was at its highest.”

“I’m honored to be involved with the addition of this support for nursing education,”  says naming benefactor, Jackie Wells.  “And I wish Morgan nothing but success in her pursuit to help others.”
