The baseball Buckeyes dropped the weekend opener in Houston as the University of Texas-San Antonio scored five times in the final three innings to win, 6-5.
Houston, TX – The Ohio State Buckeyes (5-3) scored first – two in the first, and added one in the fifth – and starting pitcher Gavin Kuzniewski made those runs stand for the first six innings.
But the University of Texas-San Antonio would tie the game against Signman in the sixth (at 3-3)…then score five times over the next three innings to eke out a 6-5 win in the opening game of the Bruce Bolt College Baseball Classic on Friday.
Kuzniewski was outstanding – competitive – scattering six hits and three runs, while striking out five in his longest outing of the season in three starts.
And the offense should have been enough, scoring twice in the first, once in the fifth, and twice more in the top of the ninth.
But there wasn’t enough margin for error against the 8-1 Roadrunners.
Righthander Zak Sigman came out of the bullpen in the seventh to give up two runs on a walk and a two-run homer.
Ryan Zamora came out to pitch the eighth and gave up an unearned run without benefit of hit…to put the Buckeyes behind 6-3 entering the ninth inning.
But the Buckeyes then mounted a rally in the top of the ninth, scoring twice on a single by Miles Vandenheuvel, a double by Lee Ellis, and a pair of ground outs. But Henry Kaczmar grounded out top end the game and the Buckeyes fell a run short, their second loss in the last three games.
The Buckeyes lost their third of the year with 5 runs on 11 hits.
UTSA won it with 6 runs on 7 hits.
Offensively, Lee Ellis, Henry Kaczmar, Noah Furcht, and Maddix Simpon each had two hits apiece, and accounted for 8 of the team’s 11 hits.
Pitching-wise, Zak Sigman took the loss in relief, leveling his record through eight games to 1-1.
The weekend series continues on Saturday with a 12:00 noon (ET) game with the University of Mississippi.
