St. Mary’s, Fort Recovery, Coldwater and Parkway punched their tickets to districts, no surprises there. New Bremen sent a pair of bowlers on to the next round as individuals.
Minster, Oh – It was a rough day to be a bowling pin in lane seven.
St. Mary’s shocked precisely nobody by abusing enough lane seven bowling pins to score 3,572 points and capture first place in the girls’ bowling sectional tournament. A trifecta of MAC teams rounded out the top four: Fort Recovery, Coldwater and Parkway.
Fort Recovery (8-0) had no need to peek a lane over and take notes from St. Mary’s, they scored 3,481, enough for a comfortable second place finish, though no doubt they would’ve loved to catch the Roughriders.
Coldwater scored 3,070 behind the efforts Brittany Burden and CO., the MAC’s second best bowler.
Parkway faced a scare, sitting in fifth place after regulation, but clawed back through New Bremen’s upset bid and into qualifying position with a score of 2,996.
Though New Bremen relinquished the third place ranking they earned in regulation, Leah Luedeke and Marina Nelson bowled well enough to secure themselves a spot in districts as individuals.
St. Mary’s is no stranger to tournament success. Hoping to repeat last year’s trip to the state tournament, it was business as usual. No doubt wanted by the bowling pin police, the Roughriders piled up strikes and took the first step in the right direction this postseason.
The three MAC squads that followed St. Mary’s did so by leaning into their strengths.
Fort Recovery’s depth is matched by few teams in the area. Though they don’t have a top-5 bowler in the MAC, they boast five of the top 16. With five bowlers who average over a 150 per game, there’s plenty of forgiveness when any of the five have an off day. And indeed today all five bowlers averaged between at least 150 points per round. Ella Schoen dominated with 554 points, backed up by Brooklyn Wyerick with 526.
Coldwater makes the wheels turn via a dynamic duo of Brittany Burden and Emily Brunswick, though often Megan McNeil jumps in the band to make it a trio. The stars shined bright enough today to cruise to third place.
Parkway’s elite consistency across the board allowed them not to panic when they got down early. Bowlers like Breanna Berry and Ashtlynn Muhlenkamp, among others, helped string together a stellar set of Baker games, vaulted them back over New Bremen, and no matter the road it took to get there, they’ll make an appearance at districts.
Bowling may not often be treated like other sports, but the principles are the same. When the going gets tough, and when the stakes are highest, lean on what you do best.
