The most recent correspondence from readers, particularly on coverage of the state football tournament…who asked why we didn’t cover everyone the same. The answer: Does anyone?
It was interesting to hear from many football readers of this site, who in the absence of our writing about select games at last week’s tournament, chose to let us know.
“I was disappointed that you didn’t write about the Massillon-Hoban game. Frequent reader of Press Pros who thought you missed a great opportunity.” … Robert Grano
(Ed. Note: You didn’t mention if you were a Hoban or a Massillon follower, but we have written in the past about Hoban, in particular, at the state baseball tournaments. I don’t remember hearing from you then.)
“I think I speak for more than myself when I say that you obviously respect the accomplishments of Marion Local more than you do Kirtland. You barely mentioned the Kirtland record (compared to Marion Local) in your story about the Versailles game, and that’s biased journalism. And they’re not a ‘dynasty’ until they play someone their own skill level!” … Joseph Mileti
(Ed. Note: Those are our words (dynasty), and not theirs, but to what lengths would you ask a high school football team to go to satisfy ‘your’ bias? Cincinnati? Dayton? Cleveland? Life is football, but football is not life.)
“You guys do a wonderful job of covering the state tournaments, as long as you win. Enough said. It would be nice to see something more written about the teams that got there and didn’t win, besides the score.” … Joyce Steinbruner
“You need to do a better job of giving schools other than ones you cover equal credit for at least getting to the state final. Just my opinion.” … James Rand
(Ed. Note: Does anyone?)
“Congratulations to Press Pros for again knocking it out of the park. Great writing and phenomenal photos. Always look forward to your perspective on the games.” … Terry Dye
“I’ve read your work of the tournament for years and it’s still the best story on any event that you cover. It’s nice to read the old school color you guys add.” … Harvey Butcher
(Ed. Note: Thanks the kind words, Harvey, and the old school color that you mention is probably because we have a pretty good roster of ‘old school’ writers. If Dick Young and Jim Murray were still here we’d have them, too.)
“After the fact, how would this year’s Ironton team have fared in Division V against Perry?” … Adam Blankenship
(Ed. Note: Adam, really hard to give you an answer because we didn’t see Ironton in person this year. But I’ve yet to see a team coached by Trevon Pendleton that wasn’t competitive.)
“Press Pros…thank you for putting winning where it belongs, and for giving people a voice on your site. This letter would never appear in the Plain Dealer or the Columbus Dispatch.” … Mitchell Amstutz
“I’ve never seen them play, but from out of the area I appreciate the Marion Local Flyers for their achievement, and for setting the higher standard. There’s nothing watered down about their record, and it’s a privilege to be around to see it. Dynasties are good, as you write!” … Wayne L. Hayes
“Great to see Steve Blackledge writing at the state tournament. Always enjoyed his work with the Dispatch. Your Press Pros site is awesome.” … Bob Snyder
