Division I: St. X Outlasts St. Ignatius, 27-20 (2 ot)….

St. Xavier outslugged 11-time winner St. Ignatius in Division I to claim the Bombers’ third title in football.

Columbus – You have to play the game, they say.

Apparently!

At least that’s how the outcome of the Division I final was determined between 11-time champion St. Ignatius and 2-time champion St. X Friday night.  And those that stuck around for it got more than their money’s worth.

Tied 10-10 at the end of four quarters, the two parochial powerhouses went into the second overtime before St. X settled the matter, 27-20.  It marked the Bombers’ third all-time championship in football;  and capped off a wild day of title competition in Divisions VI, IV, and I.

Earlier, Marion Local won its ninth title, 21-17, over Cuyahoga Heights for the Division VI crown.

In Division III, Bishop Hartley beat Steubenville with no time remaining on the clock, 24-21, on a 31-yard field goal.

Play concludes Saturday with three final games…Minster meeting John F. Kennedy at 10 am for the Division VII title, Trotwood and Archbishop Hoban meet at 3 pm in Division III, and Coldwater will face Canton Central Catholic at 8 pm to determine the Division V winner…for the third year in a row.
