In the aftermath of Monday’s debate, all I hear is people saying that if one or the other is elected they’re going to leave the country. My question is…for where?
OK, you’ve heard it. I’ve heard it.
The bold boasts of entertainers like George Clooney, Bill Maher, Michael Moore, and Barbara Streisand – politicians and clergymen (?) like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton – claiming that if Donald Trump is elected president they’re going to leave the country to live somewhere else.
Likewise, as I watched Monday’s debate wind down with a stiff glass of George Dickel in hand I got a text from a friend in Indiana telling me that surely if Hillary Clinton wins and spends as much as she claims she will off the backs of taxpayers…he’s going to leave, too.
But seriously, if you’re considering the same as a partisan of either…where will you go?
And more seriously…where do you think someone like Al Sharpton would actually go? You think Rev. Al is going to Canada, the old traditional favorite of get-away options? That was the popular choice during the Vietnam War, when I was young, but it hardly seems to fit Sharpton’s social-economic agenda at this stage of his life. I can’t see anyone there writing him checks, and it’s too cold. Can you see him enjoying an Edmonton winter? Al Sharpton in Under Armour, ice fishing on a frozen lake? Nuh-uh.
As for Jesse Jackson, there isn’t enough easy money in Canada; there are no ‘rainbows’ for him to be in coalition with, and who’s going be able to communicate with him, anyway. Eh? What Canadian could actually understand Jesse Jackson?
Clooney and Streisand have enough money to go live in their villas on the Riviera. Michael Moore? Not so much. And Clooney and Streisand have had their days of audience and adulation. Michael Moore still desperately needs to be seen, listened to, and wanted by someone. God knows who, though.
Bill Maher…fancies himself as a political commentator, or a comedian. He’s largely made a career off beating up the Bush family, or the Republican party. But where would he go? Russia and China are out, because political commentary isn’t very welcome there. And Canada is a liberal country, but they don’t give a damn about his humor. They’ve got hockey!
As for the common schlep like me, there is no option. I’ll stay and put up with whatever God determines through his infinite wisdom.
I am kind of anxious to see the look on Hillary’s face if she wins…and finds out that there really aren’t enough millionaires to tax to pay the 20 trillion dollar debt, or, the 20 trillion additional she’ll no doubt borrow to pay for all she intends to spend.
Trump? He’s the ultimate winner, whether he’s elected or not. If not, he goes back to his company and makes more money.
Either way, I’m staying. Better to be here, even with Hillary, than with a cold Al Sharpton…in Edmonton!
