Opening night of the football season turned out to be a tease…as many area games were suspended until Saturday to determine the outcome. And some good ones, at that!
It wasn’t what Marion Local coach Tim Goodwin had in mind.
That is, if you drive sixty miles on a school bus to play football…you want to play football, come, well, something that rhymes with well, or high water.
As it turned out Friday, on opening night of the 2016 Ohio high school football season, that just what many got…the wrong kind of thunder and lightning, and high water!
Leading 7-0 with 6:48 remaining in the second quarter at Chaminade-Julienne, Goodwin and his Flyers were waved off the field by the officials after lightning was sighted. And with game-time temperatures hovering around 90 and with like humidity, no one was surprised.
They waited as the skies turned black, with more lightning, a 30-minute downpour to christen CJ’s brand-new Roger Glass Stadium, and waited even longer as the rain subsided. But the lightning continued. Marion wanted to play, rather than bus home and back again on Saturday morning. But in the end that’s just what they got. Saturday morning football and another 60-mile drive.
As it turned out, it was a harbinger of things to come…in Troy, Piqua, Covington, and all over the Miami Valley as one game after another was suspended for lightning, to be continued on Saturday.
Only Lehman and Ft. Recovery, among area schools, were able to complete their game on schedule…a 21-20 Recovery win.
And farther north, Coldwater outscored Kenton 58-39 in a game totaling 97 points and 937 total yards by both teams.
For their part, Goodwin and Marion Local will come back to Dayton at 10:30 am Saturday to pick up play midway through the second quarter.
In other local games, Covington and St. Henry will play the second half of their game at 10 am, tied 6-6. Likewise, Piqua and Troy will conclude their games with 10 am starts on Saturday.
